Father's Day12/7/2018 You know how sometimes you're looking for a gift for someone and you just stumble across something that says 'I saw this and thought of you'? This was the other way round.
I was looking for a card for my Dad for Father's Day (who'd have thought?) when I spotted a card and thought 'I saw this and it was made for me'. Sounds a bit arrogant, but this one really was. It was a Father's Day card, presumably meant for a child, but it had a big white area in the middle ideal for drawing a picture of your father. I had to get it. I then had to find a suitable picture, quickly, as Father's Day was, not surprisingly, on Sunday. I bought the card on Saturday. I scrolled through the pictures on my phone and found one which looked like it had been taken just for the card. Last October. I got to work and managed to complete the picture in three half-hour sessions. For someone who can't draw people, it seems faces aren't all that difficult. Note to self - greeting card card is not ideal to draw on.

The dog11/7/2018 We got the sad news that my former neighbour of almost 30 years had passed away - of course we went to the funeral. At the wake following the funeral, I was chatting briefly to my neighbour's daughter and her husband. I showed her the pictures I had drawn of Joseph.
It turns out, the family dog had passed away, quite suddenly, the week before the funeral. The poor woman had that to deal with on top of every-thing else. Coincidentally, she had been looking for someone who would be able to do a pencil sketch of the dog to remember her by. And there I come with my sketches of Joseph... Naturally, I couldn't refuse to do the drawing. Another deadline approached where my parents were having dinner with the daughter and her husband. I wanted to give it to her then. It wasn't quite finished by the time my parents left for the dinner, so I finished it and followed on. Thus, I was able to see her reaction when I handed it over. She was so happy with it she brought a tear to my eye. The second one11/7/2018 So the picture of Joseph turned out better than I hoped. I'm actually really chuffed with it: who knew I could draw people?! So after the success of my mother's picture (her birthday was in September) it seemed a good idea to draw a picture of Joseph for each of my two sisters for their Christmas presents.
We were all over the place for Christmas so we had Christmas Day Part Two shortly after Christmas. This was a good thing for me as I didn't have a suitable picture of Joseph to draw. Until Christmas. That gave me a bit of a tight deadline! As I was drawing two I decided to draw on A5 paper, rather than A4. That didn't make them any quicker to draw though. So how did these ones turn out? Could I duplicate the success of the first drawing? Take a look at these... And so it begins...11/7/2018 I've always enjoyed drawing things; the problem I used to have was deciding what to draw. After years of not drawing anything, my mother's 70th birthday came along. We didn't have a lot of money but I wanted to give her some-thing really nice. The solution seemed to be to draw something for her and the only thing I could think of drawing was her grandson, Joseph. The problem with that is that I can't draw people! Or so I thought...
I decided to give it a try anyway - how bad could it be? How did it turn out? Well, Mom got some pretty special presents for that birthday but she has said her picture of Joseph was the best present. Judge for yourself - the original picture and the progression of the sketch are below... |
